Vaginoplasty surgery or posterior colporrhaphy, is a surgical procedure designed to tighten the vagina. Non-invasive vaginal tightening with radiofrequency waves or laser involves heating of the tissues and neo-collagenesis. But, women with significant laxity may not experience a benefit from these treatments and these women are better candidates for surgical tightening with vaginoplasty.
After childbirth, there is significant trauma to the birth canal and women may complain of vaginal laxity or looseness and loss for libido or sexual gratification. Vaginal laxity is also common with ageing; women around peri-menopausal age start feeling vaginal looseness due to low hormone levels.
Vaginoplasty is an OPD procedure, done under local anaesthesia. Once the amount of tightening to be done is determined, a wedge incision is given and redundant tissue removed. Removing the redundant tissue from the posterior wall tightens the vaginal canal. The mucosal skin is then sutured close. It takes around 1 hour to complete the procedure.
There are no major or minor risks associated with the procedure. But, reporting to hospital is advised in any of these conditions:
Complete healing takes around six to eight weeks. There may be pain at the incision sit for first few days for which antibiotics and painkillers are advised at time of discharge. Use of tampons and sexual activity is at hold till 6 – 8 weeks.
Vaginoplasty typically results in a tighter vaginal canal as compared to non-invasive methods, which can help to enhance sexual satisfaction.
